UK Customs & VAT Explained
Since Brexit, parcels sent from Australia to the UK are subject to the following import rules:
- Under £135: Seller/platform usually collects UK VAT (20%) at checkout — parcel clears customs duty-free
- Over £135: Recipient must pay 20% import VAT to HMRC upon entry, plus any applicable customs duty (typically 0–12% depending on HS code)
- Invoice requirement: All parcels must include a commercial invoice stating item description, quantity, unit price, and total declared value

Regardless of origin warehouse (Australia / China / Malaysia / Japan etc.), Ebaoguo offers three channel types:
| Channel | Examples | Duty terms |
|---|---|---|
| ① Consolidation line (proprietary) | Ebaoguo direct air / sea | DDP only when article explicitly labels “duty included / DDP”; otherwise DDU |
| ② Postal services (national postal) | Australia Post, China Post, Pos Malaysia, Japan Post, SingPost, etc. | DDU — recipient pays at destination |
| ③ International express | FedEx, DHL, UPS, etc. | DDU — recipient pays at destination |
The customs and tax information on this page is compiled from official government sources and is provided strictly as a shipping reference. At the time of actual clearance:
- Destination customs authorities may consider the declared value, but are not obliged to use it as the assessable basis;
- Customs may apply their own product valuation database or reference price to determine duty;
- The exact duty amount, whether duty is levied, and whether the parcel is inspected are solely at the discretion of destination customs; Ebaoguo cannot guarantee outcomes;
- This page does not constitute a tax-assessment authority and cannot be used as evidence in any customs dispute;
- All duties, VAT, consumption tax, and surcharges are paid by the recipient at destination (DDU); Ebaoguo does not collect or pre-pay duty.
How to Ship
Two quick options to get started:
Option 1: Online Purchase — Ship Direct to Ebaoguo Melbourne Warehouse
- Register at ebaoguo.com to get your Melbourne warehouse address and personal Suite ID (required on every parcel — this is how we identify your packages)
- When shopping at any Australian online store, enter the warehouse address as the delivery address. Already purchased? You can also forward existing packages to the same address
- Once your parcel arrives at the warehouse, we photograph and log it into your account
- Select the packages you want to ship from your parcel list, submit a shipment request, and enter the recipient’s delivery address
- The warehouse processes your order and calculates the final shipping fee
- When the shipment status changes to “Pending Payment”, complete payment in the system
Option 2: Melbourne Locals — Drop Off at an Agent Location
- Register at ebaoguo.com or via the WeChat Mini Program
- Complete a pre-declaration form (recipient info and parcel declaration) — one form per delivery address is sufficient
- Bring your parcels to a Melbourne agent location and give staff your pre-declaration reference number
- Agent staff will measure dimensions and weigh your parcels
- Pay on the spot at the agent location
Prohibited Items
The list below covers the items that cannot be sent to the UK on any of our shipping routes.
The following items are prohibited on all routes. Misdeclaration may result in seizure by customs and potential fines:
- White powder, crystalline substances
- Explosives (e.g. fireworks, gunpowder)
- Road-legal electric bicycles and electric scooters (import licence required)
- Dangerous gases: flammable gases (e.g. aerosols, camping gas), non-flammable gases (e.g. compressed oxygen), toxic gases
- Flammable liquids (e.g. solvents, paint); flammable solids (e.g. matches); self-igniting substances; substances that react dangerously with water (e.g. calcium carbide)
- Oxidising substances (e.g. fertilisers); organic peroxides
- Toxic substances (e.g. pesticides); infectious substances (e.g. blood test samples)
- Radioactive materials
- Strongly corrosive substances (e.g. bleach, drain cleaner)
- Products with explosive devices (e.g. airbags); strong magnets or ferromagnetic materials
- Lithium batteries or power banks not installed in devices (loose/bare cells); oversized batteries
- Perfume, nail polish, aftershave, hairspray, and other cosmetics with hazardous material properties
- Cigarettes, loose tobacco, e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and vape liquids
- Alcoholic beverages; prescription medications; narcotics and controlled substances
- Counterfeit goods; items infringing intellectual property rights
- Cash; negotiable instruments and securities
- Packaging that shrinks or shows minor dents in transit (especially by air) due to changes in air pressure at altitude — as long as the outer shipping box itself is undamaged, this is a normal physical effect, not product damage;
- Breakage of fragile items — this applies regardless of whether reinforced packing was selected;
- Spoilage or expiry of short-shelf-life or temperature-sensitive food caused by transit time, customs clearance waits, or last-mile delivery.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does shipping from Australia to the UK take?
On Ebaoguo’s FedEx line it’s usually 3–7 business days to major UK cities like London, Manchester and Birmingham. Add a day or two if UK customs pulls your parcel for inspection, which is more common during peak periods.
What happens if my parcel value exceeds £135?
Your recipient pays 20% UK import VAT to HMRC when the parcel lands, plus any customs duty if the goods attract it. Give them a heads-up before it arrives so the bill isn’t a surprise — it’s usually collected before final delivery.
Can I ship electronics with batteries?
Electronics with batteries installed inside the device (phones, tablets) are generally accepted, but Australia Post limits each parcel to a maximum of 2 battery-installed items or 4 individual cells — larger quantities must be split across multiple parcels. Standalone lithium batteries shipped separately are prohibited. Batteries over 100Wh (e.g. e-bikes, e-scooters, large medical equipment batteries) cannot be shipped by any method.
How is volumetric weight calculated?
FedEx uses: L(cm) × W(cm) × H(cm) ÷ 5,000 = volumetric kg. You are charged based on whichever is greater — actual or volumetric weight. Use our calculator to estimate costs.
Can I consolidate multiple parcels into one shipment?
Yes — this is one of Ebaoguo’s key advantages. Parcels from different suppliers can be combined into a single shipment, reducing volumetric weight and saving significantly on shipping costs. See value-added services.
Will UK customs inspect my parcel?
All international parcels may be selected for inspection. Accurate declarations and a complete commercial invoice minimise the chance of delays.
Does Ebaoguo cover UK import duties?
No — the Australia–UK line is DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid), so import VAT and any duty are paid by the recipient in the UK, not bundled into your shipping cost. If you’d rather sort out clearance a specific way, message us before you ship and we’ll talk through the options.
How long can my parcel stay in the Melbourne warehouse, and can I combine multiple orders?
Your items can rest free at our Melbourne warehouse for up to 30 days — plenty of time to wait for the rest of a multi-store haul to land. We consolidate everything into one box, strip out excess packaging to reduce volumetric weight, then dispatch once you confirm. Combining parcels is the single biggest way to bring down your AU$/kg cost to the UK on the FedEx line.
By using Ebaoguo services you agree to our Terms & Conditions. Please ensure your goods comply with UK customs regulations before shipping.
