Waybill Chargeable Weight
Chargeable weight
Because air transport billing considers not only the actual weight of the parcel but also its dimensions, which is often referred to as volumetric weight.
- a. Chargeable weight will compare the actual weight and volumetric weight of each parcel, taking the greater of the two.
- For example, if the actual weight of a parcel is 3.1kg and the volumetric weight is 2.1kg, then the chargeable weight of this parcel will be 3.1kg, which, when rounded up to the nearest 500g, becomes 3.5kg.
- b. The chargeable weight of a waybill is the cumulative sum of the chargeable weights of each parcel within that waybill.
- c. The international logistics volumetric weight calculation method is: Length (cm) * Width (cm) * Height (cm) / 5000.
- For consolidated shipping, the first weight is 1kg; if less than 1kg, it is calculated as 1kg. For weights within 10kg, it is rounded up to the nearest 500g. For weights above 10kg, it is rounded up to the nearest 1kg. For example, a parcel with a chargeable weight of 1.3kg will be calculated as 1.5kg, and a parcel of 10.2kg will be calculated as 11KG.
- If the actual weight is within 2KG and the volumetric weight does not exceed 5KG, only the actual weight will be rounded up to the nearest 500g. A 1.3kg parcel will be calculated as 1.5kg.
Example
For example: Xiao Ming wants to send two parcels to the same recipient.
Parcel 1’s actual weight is 4KG, and its volumetric weight is 36(cm)*35(cm)*30(cm)/5000=7.56. So, Parcel 1’s chargeable weight will be calculated as 8KG.
Parcel 2’s actual weight is 10KG, and its volumetric weight is 36(cm)*35(cm)*30(cm)/5000=7.56. So, Parcel 2’s chargeable weight will be calculated as 10KG.
Therefore, the total chargeable weight for Xiao Ming’s waybill is 8KG + 10KG = 18KG.
Measurement Method for Irregular Parcels
① Standard Parcel Measurement Method:
If the parcel is a standard carton size, the volumetric weight is calculated based on the carton’s length, width, and height.

② Curved Parcel Measurement Method:
If the parcel’s surface is bulging or deformed due to goods compression, it will be measured along its longest side.

③ Irregular Parcel Measurement Method:
If the actual size of the goods requires an irregular package, the volumetric weight will be calculated based on the longest side.

Guidelines for Size and Weight of a Single Parcel
Please see the example below for guidance on measuring regular and irregular-shaped parcels, as well as satchels.

Chargeable Weight
Because air transportation is charged based on not only the actual weight of the package but also the size of the package, which is also known as the volumetric weight.
a. The chargeable weight is greater than each package’s actual weight and volumetric weight. For example, if the actual weight of a package is 3.1kg and the volumetric weight is 2.1kg, then the chargeable weight of this package is 3.1kg, which is rounded up to 3.5kg by 500g. b. The chargeable weight of a waybill is the sum of the chargeable weight of each package in the waybill. c. The volumetric weight calculation method for international logistics is length(cm) x width(cm) x height(cm) / 5000. The minimum weight of a shipping line is 1kg. If it is less than 1kg, it is calculated as 1kg. For weights less than 10kg, the chargeable weight is rounded up by 500g; for weights over 10kg, the chargeable weight is rounded up by 1kg. For example, a package with a chargeable weight of 1.3kg will be calculated as 1.5kg, and a package with a chargeable weight of 10.2kg will be calculated as 11kg.
If the actual weight is less than 2kg and the volumetric weight is not more than 5kg, only the actual weight is rounded up by 500g. For example, a package with an actual weight of 1.3kg will be rounded up to 1.5kg.
For example, Mr.X must send two packages to the same recipient.
Package 1 weighs 4kg, and the volumetric weight is 36(cm) x 35(cm) x 30(cm) / 5000 = 7.56. So the chargeable weight of package 1 will be calculated as 8kg.
Package 2 weighs 10kg, and the volumetric weight is 36(cm) x 35(cm) x 30(cm) / 5000 = 7.56. So the chargeable weight of package 2 will be calculated as 10kg.
Therefore, the chargeable weight of Mr.X’s waybill is 8kg + 10kg = 18kg.
Dimension Weight vs Actual Weight
What is Actual weight?
The actual weight of a parcel is its actual gross weight measured in kg/s when you put on the scale.
What is Dimension weight?
Dimension weight(aka: Volumetric weight) is the ‘volume’ a package occupies (example; the physical size of a package)
Dimension weight is calculated by the ( Length x Height x Width / 5000).
To determine a parcel’s dimension weight in kg, we use measurements in centimeters.
What is Chargeable weight?
Chargeable weight is the actual gross weight or the volumetric weight of the parcels shipment – whichever is greater.
