CNShopper has joined the r/Taobao community with a giveaway and new-user perks. Here is how shopping agents work and how to enter.

What the CNShopper and r/Taobao partnership actually means

"Colourful

If you have ever tried to buy something on Taobao from overseas, you know the usual roadblocks. You may not be able to register without a mainland phone number, the app is mostly in Chinese, and payment often fails with foreign cards. That is exactly the gap shopping agents fill, and it is why the news from the r/Taobao community caught our eye.

CNShopper, a shopping agent for Taobao and other Chinese platforms, has announced a partnership with r/Taobao. The idea is simple. You paste a product link into CNShopper, or browse products on the CNShopper site itself, and the agent places the order on your behalf. You do not need your own Taobao account, and you get an English interface throughout.

To welcome the community, CNShopper is offering new-user coupons, a promo code called taobao that gives a discount on international shipping, and what it describes as competitive exchange rates and shipping options. There is also a community giveaway. Two commenters are randomly selected to receive CNShopper account balance, and winners are announced seven days after the original post went live.

A quick note on how we approach this. Promotions change, and the exact terms live on the original r/Taobao thread and on CNShopper’s own pages, so check those for the current details before you rely on a coupon. What we can do here is walk you through how the agent model works, so you know what to expect once your order is placed.

How a shopping agent works, from pasted link to your doorstep

"Person

Think of a shopping agent as a local friend in China who buys things for you and then ships them abroad. The flow is almost always the same, whichever agent you use.

First, you find an item you like on Taobao, Tmall, 1688 or a similar marketplace. You copy the product link and paste it into the agent’s order form, then choose the colour, size and quantity. Second, you pay the agent, usually in your own currency, and the agent pays the seller in yuan. Third, the seller ships the item to the agent’s warehouse in China, where it is checked and logged. Fourth, you choose an international shipping line and the parcel is sent to your address.

The step that surprises newcomers is the warehouse. Your item does not travel straight from the seller to you. It waits at the warehouse until it has arrived, and this is also where you can combine several purchases into one parcel. Items from different sellers rarely arrive on the same day, so consolidating them usually means fewer shipments and less hassle.

Two habits save most first-time buyers from trouble. Read the product page carefully, since sizing on Chinese listings often runs smaller than Western sizing. Also check the shipping restrictions for your destination before you order, because batteries, liquids and some branded goods can be limited by carriers or customs. If you are brand new to this, CNShopper has published a beginner guide on r/MyCNshopper that covers the basics.

Estimating your shipping cost before you hit buy

"Packed

The item price is only part of the final bill. International shipping can easily be the biggest variable, and it depends on a few things that are worth understanding before you order.

Carriers charge on whichever is greater: the actual weight of your parcel or its volumetric weight, which is calculated from the box dimensions. A large but light item, such as a puffer jacket or a duvet, can cost more to ship than a small, dense one. Packaging matters too. Removing bulky outer boxes where it is allowed can bring the volume down, and consolidating items into one tighter parcel often works better than sending several separate ones.

Your destination and chosen line also change the picture. Faster express options and slower economy options behave differently on price, transit time and tracking detail, and what is available varies between countries. A promo code on shipping, like the one in this announcement, is a nice bonus, but it works best when you already know roughly what a parcel would cost without it.

To get a realistic number for a China-to-Australia parcel, try the calculator below, then compare it against the quote you see in your agent’s checkout. We never quote fixed prices in articles because rates change, and the calculator always reflects the latest figures.
