Wrong size, damaged item or changed your mind? Here is how to start a Taobao return from overseas and avoid costly mistakes.

Can you actually return items on Taobao from overseas?

"Shopper

Yes, you can, but a Taobao return works differently from returning something to a store in Sydney, London or Singapore. Most Taobao sellers are small businesses in mainland China, and their return policies are set shop by shop. The good news is that Taobao has a built-in after-sales system, so you rarely need to chase a seller by email.

Most shops join the “7-day no-reason return” programme. If the listing shows that badge, you can usually return an item within seven days of receiving it, as long as it is unused and in its original packaging. Other shops only accept returns for faults, wrong items or items that differ from the description. Always read the shop’s policy on the product page before you pay.

The trickiest part for overseas buyers is the address. If your parcel was sent to a forwarder’s warehouse in China, as with most overseas orders, the return is a domestic China-to-China shipment. That is actually good news. It is far cheaper and faster than sending a parcel back across borders, and it is the main reason buying through a forwarder makes returns easier.

If the parcel has already left China and reached you, returning it is much harder. International return shipping is expensive, customs may treat it as a new export, and many sellers will refuse to pay for it. In that case, a partial refund negotiated with the seller is often the better outcome.

How to start a Taobao return in five steps

"Phone

The process is simple once you know where to look. Act quickly, because the return window starts when the parcel is marked as received.

  1. Open the Taobao app, go to “My Taobao” and then “All Orders”, and find the item.

  2. Tap “Apply for refund” (申请退款) and choose “Return and refund” (退货退款), not “Refund only”.

  3. Select your reason and upload clear photos. For a damaged or wrong item, show the item, the label and the packaging.

  4. Wait for the seller to approve. Sellers normally have a set period to respond, and if they ignore the request, Taobao can step in.

  5. Once approved, ship the item to the return address shown and enter the tracking number in the app.

Keep the original packaging, tags and accessories until the refund is confirmed. Take a short video while unpacking if the order was expensive, because it is strong evidence in a dispute.

If the seller rejects your request unfairly, you can request Taobao’s platform intervention (申请平台介入). Provide your photos, chat history and tracking details. Do this before the order’s confirmation deadline passes, or you may lose your protection.

Finally, remember that the refund goes back to your original payment method. Depending on that method, it may take several business days to show up.

Who pays for return shipping, and how to estimate the cost

    "Calculator

Return shipping costs depend on the reason for the return. If the item is faulty, wrong or not as described, the seller should pay. Many shops also offer return-shipping insurance (运费险), which refunds your outgoing return postage automatically. Look for this label at checkout.

If you simply changed your mind, you will most likely pay the return postage yourself, unless the shop says otherwise. For a parcel sitting in a China warehouse, that is a domestic courier fee, which is normally modest compared with international rates.

The costs change when you have already received the goods overseas. You would need to pay international freight, and the seller’s refund may not cover it. Before deciding, compare what the return would cost against the item’s value. Use the calculator below to check the shipping cost for your route.
