Smart ways to keep browsing

Your Taobao account got restricted and the homepage feed is gone. Here is what is realistic, what is not, and how to keep buying.

Why your Taobao account may be restricted from the US

If your Taobao account was working for a year and then suddenly stopped, you are not alone. Many overseas users have reported restrictions on accounts tied to non-Chinese phone numbers, especially accounts that browse a lot but never complete an order. Nobody outside the platform can say exactly why a specific account is flagged, so treat any single explanation as a guess.

What we do know is that platforms tend to tighten checks on accounts that look inactive in terms of purchases, use foreign numbers, log in through VPNs, or change region often. Verifying an ID or linking a related account does not always lift a restriction, because the decision sits with the platform’s risk system rather than with a single checkbox.

That is why repeated attempts such as new sign-ups with temporary numbers, switching VPN servers and re-verifying often make things worse. Each attempt can look like more suspicious behaviour, and it may trigger further limits on your device or network.

The good news: your real goal is simple. You want to see products you like and get them to your door. You do not strictly need a Taobao account for that. The next sections walk through safer options, and why borrowing someone else’s login is a bad idea.

It is tempting to ask in forums for an unused account you can log into. We would advise against it, for a few practical reasons.

Security. A shared account holds someone else’s saved addresses, payment methods and chat history. You have no idea who else has the password, and you cannot protect yourself if it is misused.

It breaks the platform’s terms. Account sharing and resale are typically prohibited. If the account is flagged, you lose access again, and anything you ordered or any balance on it could be stuck.

The feed will not be yours. The reason you want the homepage is the personalised algorithm. On someone else’s account, that feed shows their tastes, not yours, so the main benefit disappears.

Scams are common. People who offer accounts or “verified” numbers for a fee are a frequent source of fraud. Never pay for one, and never share verification codes with a stranger.

A cleaner path is to separate the two jobs. Discovery can happen on other apps and sites. Buying and shipping can go through a service that handles payment and delivery for you.

Other ways to discover products and plan your shipping costs

You can still find the kinds of products you like without the Taobao homepage. Here are some alternatives that many overseas shoppers use:
