Here’s why and what to do

Beauty items that worked a few months ago can suddenly disappear from your Taobao app. Here is what is likely going on and how to get around it.

Why the item page won’t even open

"Smartphone

A common report from US shoppers goes like this: you bought sunscreen and eyeliner a few months ago without any trouble, but now tapping the listing does nothing, or the page shows a blank screen or an “unavailable” message. Before blaming your phone or wifi, it helps to know that this is rarely a device problem, especially if you are not using a VPN and other pages load normally.

The most likely explanation is that the listing or the whole product category is restricted for your delivery region. Beauty and personal care items are regulated in many countries. Platforms and sellers often adjust which products can be shown or shipped to overseas addresses, and they can do so without any notice. That would explain why the same shop sold to you earlier and now blocks you.

There are a few quick checks worth doing. First, update the Taobao app, since older versions sometimes handle overseas accounts badly. Second, check which region and address are set as your default, because the app can filter products based on that. Third, open the same listing on a browser or a different account to see whether the block follows your address or your login. Finally, try a different product from the same category. If every sunscreen and cosmetic page fails but electronics and clothing open fine, you are almost certainly hitting a category restriction rather than a technical fault.

None of this is guaranteed to be permanent. Restrictions change, and what is blocked today may reopen later. But it is safer to plan around the block than to wait for it to disappear.

Why makeup and sunscreen get extra scrutiny

"Customs

Cosmetics look harmless, but they sit in a tricky spot for cross-border shipping. In the US, sunscreen is generally treated as an over-the-counter drug rather than a simple cosmetic, and other beauty products have their own labelling and ingredient expectations. Importing them commercially involves rules that ordinary sellers on a marketplace may not want to deal with. Restricting the category for overseas addresses is the easy way out for them.

Then there is the physical side. Many beauty products are liquids, creams, gels, aerosols or powders. Carriers often apply extra handling rules to these, particularly on air routes, and some lines will not accept certain items at all. A sunscreen spray, a perfume or a nail polish can be treated very differently from a pencil eyeliner, even though they are all in the same shopping cart.

Another factor is authenticity and safety. Buyers and regulators both worry about counterfeit or unverified cosmetics, so platforms tend to tighten controls when a category attracts complaints. If a few sellers have had shipments held or returned, a listing may be switched off for all overseas destinations.

This is general background, not legal advice, and rules vary by product and change over time. If you are ordering larger quantities, or products with active ingredients, check the current US requirements before buying. For small personal-use orders, the practical question is usually whether the seller and the shipping route will accept the item.

Working out the real cost before you rebuy

"Calculator

If the listing opens through another route, the next question is what the parcel will really cost to land in the US. Beauty products are small and light, which makes them tempting to order one at a time, but that is often the most expensive way to do it. Each separate parcel carries its own base handling, and cosmetics that need a slower or more careful route can add to that.

A better habit is to batch purchases. Order the makeup, skincare and any clothes or accessories from different shops, let them arrive at one address in China, and ship them together in a single box. Weight and size drive the final price, so it is worth knowing both before you commit to a big haul.

You can get an estimate for the China to US route with the calculator below. Enter the approximate weight and dimensions of what you plan to send, then compare the options. Remember that some products may be limited on certain lines, so an estimate is a starting point, not a promise that every item will be accepted.
