The Taobao app is gone from the US App Store, but you can still find products, read reviews and check out through a proxy.

Can you still use Taobao from the US? The honest answer

"Shopper

Short answer: yes, you can still buy from Taobao while living in the US. What has changed is how you get there. If the app has vanished from your iPhone’s App Store, you are not doing anything wrong. App availability is set by region and by the platform’s own decisions, and it can change without much notice.

As for what happens after September 2026, nobody outside the platform can promise anything. We have not seen a confirmed announcement that the app is returning to the US store, and we would treat any rumour with caution. The practical move is to build a workflow that does not depend on the app at all.

That workflow has three parts. First, you need a way to discover products. Second, you need a way to judge them, meaning reviews, photos and seller quality. Third, you need a way to pay and get the parcel to your door without a Chinese bank card, a Chinese phone number or real-name verification.

Most people get stuck because they try to solve all three inside Taobao itself. A buying proxy handles the third part for you, and it can often help with the first two as well. Once you stop trying to become a Taobao user and start being a Taobao shopper, the whole thing gets much lighter. You do not need to log in to search, and you do not need to fight the sign-in wall that keeps redirecting you.

Finding product links without the Google Images scroll

"Phone

Scrolling Google Images and racing the redirect is a hack, and it is tiring. There are calmer options that work on an iPhone with no Chinese app installed.

Use the proxy’s own search. Many proxy platforms offer a keyword box, an image search or a browser plugin that pulls listings straight from Chinese marketplaces. Features differ by provider, so check what yours actually offers before you commit.

Search in Chinese. Paste your item into a translation tool and search with the Chinese term. Results are far richer than English keywords, and you will see the words sellers really use, like size, material and model number.

Look at where Chinese shoppers post. Xiaohongshu and Douyin are full of unboxings and honest reviews. Search the product name there, then trace it back to a listing. Reviews are often more useful than anything on the marketplace page.

Try 1688 for bulk or basic goods. Many items sold on Taobao originate on 1688, often with more options and a browsable web version.

Save shared links. When a friend or creator shares an item, the short link or share code usually opens the exact listing. Paste it into your proxy order form.

Whichever route you choose, ask for photos of the real item before it ships. That step replaces much of the review reading you would do inside the app.

Skip the account, then check your real cost before you buy

"Calculator

A common worry is the account itself. Reports from US buyers suggest that registering with a US phone number can be hit or miss, and that identity verification may not accept a US passport. Alipay is often suggested as a shortcut, but it may still ask for verification steps you cannot complete. These rules change, so confirm the current requirements in the app rather than relying on old forum advice.

Here is the useful part: if you already plan to buy through a proxy, you may not need a Taobao account at all. The proxy places the order under its own arrangements, pays the seller, receives the goods in China and then forwards them to you. You only need a way to identify what you want.

Before you commit to a haul, though, work out the full landed cost. The item price is only one piece. Domestic shipping in China, service fees, international freight and possible import charges all add up, and heavier or bulkier goods change the picture quickly. Batching several items into a single shipment often makes the per-item share smaller.

Use the calculator below to estimate international shipping from China to the US. Try a few weight scenarios, since a small change in parcel size can matter more than you would expect.
