New to Taobao? One skipped step can freeze your account before your first parcel even ships — here’s how to protect yourself.

Why Taobao is banning new foreign accounts so quickly

"Person

If you’ve just created a fresh Taobao account from outside mainland China and you’re already getting a freeze or ban notice — you’re not alone. Over the past year, Taobao has significantly tightened its approach to new foreign registrations. Accounts that aren’t identity-verified are being flagged almost automatically, sometimes within 24 to 48 hours of creation, and occasionally right after the first purchase is placed.

The reason comes down to fraud prevention. Taobao’s parent platform, Alibaba, processes an enormous volume of transactions daily. Unverified international accounts raise red flags in their risk-detection systems — particularly accounts that were created, browsed, and purchased all in a short window without any identity on file. The platform can’t distinguish a genuine overseas Chinese buyer from a bot or a bad actor, so it errs on the side of a hard stop.

This has caught a huge number of genuine shoppers completely off guard. You set up an account, found the items you wanted, maybe even completed checkout — and then woke up to a frozen account and no idea what went wrong. The frustrating part is that Taobao doesn’t always explain clearly why the account was frozen, leaving new users searching online for answers. The good news is that the fix is straightforward — and if you haven’t been banned yet, you can prevent it entirely in under five minutes.

How to verify your Taobao account (step by step)

"Passport

Verification is done through the Taobao app and links directly to Alipay — Alibaba’s payment platform — which handles the actual identity check. You’ll need your passport handy. Here’s the process in plain English:

Open the Taobao app and navigate to your account profile. Look for the identity or account security section — the app will display prompts guiding you through the verification steps, and these are illustrated with photos to make it clear what’s required. You’ll be redirected into Alipay to complete the passport upload. The process involves taking a photo of your passport data page and, in most cases, a quick selfie-style liveness check to confirm it’s you.

Do this immediately after creating your account — before you browse, before you add anything to your cart, and definitely before you checkout. The window where your account is most vulnerable appears to be those first 48 hours, so treating verification as step one (not step three) removes the risk entirely.

If your account is already frozen, don’t despair. On the ban or freeze notification screen, Taobao typically still shows a prompt to verify your identity. Work through that flow first. Many users have successfully unfrozen their accounts this way. If the in-app verification fails or loops, you’ll need to contact support — which is covered in the next section. The key takeaway: verification is not optional for foreign accounts in 2025. It’s the price of admission.

Already banned and need support? What your options actually are

"Person

If the in-app verification route hasn’t worked and your account remains frozen, your options narrow — but they do exist. Taobao’s support for international users without an active account login is limited to their call centre, which is based in Hong Kong. The initial language is Mandarin Chinese, but you can request an English-speaking agent to call you back.

A few things worth knowing before you pick up the phone. International calls to a Hong Kong support line can rack up fees depending on your carrier and country, so check your plan before dialling. The callback system also means you may be waiting — it’s not an instant resolution. Have your passport details and the email address tied to your Taobao account ready to give the agent. The more information you can provide upfront, the faster the process tends to go.

Some users in online communities report the verification process through support being smooth; others find it takes multiple attempts. Patience matters here. If your account was created recently and you haven’t made a purchase yet, the process is generally simpler than for accounts where a transaction was already flagged.

All of this is genuinely avoidable by verifying on day one — but if you’re already in the thick of it, the call centre is the path forward. Once your account is reinstated, go straight to the identity verification section and complete your passport upload before doing anything else. And when you’re ready to shop again, remember that consolidating your Taobao orders through a freight forwarder can save you significantly on international shipping.
